Family Loss and a Strange New House

Graphic Novel/Horror

In this first volume, the reader meets the Locke family; Rendell (father), Nina (mother), Tyler (eldest son), Kinsey (middle daughter), and Bode (youngest son). The family’s life is shattered after the murder of their father. Nina and the children are uprooted to live in the Locke family home in Lovecraft, Massachusetts, which is known locally as Keyhouse. Each child is dealing with different emotions about their father’s death. Tyler and Kinsey are dealing with two extremely different forms of guilt. Bode is missing his father greatly and is desperate for anyone to answer his many questions about his father’s death. Keyhouse is a dark and mysterious mansion that contains strange keys. If you have the right key, the doors will open to something much more than a room. There are others outside of the family who are also interested in accessing the keys and unlocking the mysteries of Keyhouse. There are evil influences and entities that stalk the Locke family...evils that are both human and nonhuman.

I was very surprised by this book. I went into reading this thinking it was another haunted house story. Well, I was proven wrong because this book deals with grief, the loss of a loved one, and the loss of childhood innocence. The book does a great job sharing with readers the feelings of grief and that those feelings are a normal reaction. This is not shocking for the genre of horror, but this graphic does contain a lot of violence, blood, and strong language. This book is great for any reluctant readers. It is a quick fast pace story with a great storyline and will leave you wanting to read Volume 2 in the series.
